Hello all. I’m really tired and my to-do list is 3,000 things long. Buuttt all these people keep talking about “self care”. And right now Reese and baby Lad are asleep in the recliner, I have coffee, breakfast, and my super comfy robe (that smells pretty bad & should probably be washed), and it’s writing time. That’s Kyla self-care. SHABAM.
Little baby Lad is doing great! He’s a whopping 10 weeks old and 12 whole pounds of squishy love. He hates tummy time with a PASSION so yesterday I put a shiny foil pan in front of him and was FASCINATED. 🙂
He is also sporting a MAJOR receding hairline and has one little patch of hair on the very back of his head. #ladykiller
For the past nine days, Lad and I have been conducting some scientific research.
Before I was pregnant, I was really good about eating healthy. I woke up, worked out and had my green smoothie. When first trimester came around I was too worried about not projectile vomiting over everyone and everything (you’re welcome). And although I still had my healthy breakfast, I was basically eating all the food. Well that, and I was like “WOOHOO LET’S EAT” because it was the holiday season and I’m no quitter.
Throughout pregnancy I still made sure I ate veggies everyday and tried to be healthy-ishhh, but I also ate plenty of bad stuff – i.e.: cookie dough out of the tube, entire pizzas and whole boxes Frosted Mini Wheats. And if you don’t believe me that I can eat an entire pizza or whole box of mini wheats in one sitting, just ask Reese. I’m usually the one eating his leftovers; I’m a bottomless pit.
Recently, little baby Lad has been having some issues with allergies, spitting up, being fussier than normal (he’s generally a really happy baby PTL) and “chicken skin” especially on his legs. Sooo a friend (Woohoo Emily!) and I decided to do the September Whole 30.
DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN.
If you haven’t heard of Whole 30, it’s basically eating very clean for 30 days – so pretty much what I was eating post-baby, but less sugars and no alcohol. Veggies, protein & fruit. No processed sugars, grains, legumes, MSG, dairy, alcohol…you know, the good stuff that is actually the bad stuff. 😉
I was a little concerned at first, because everyone says oatmeal and whole grains are a HUGE part of breast milk production. But Lad and I were both feeling like crap and I was ready to try anything.
Because I don’t know if you are aware but baby throw up is RANK.
So the research began.
Sooooooo, how’s it working out?
OH MY GOODNESS IT’S GREAT.
First off, I’m remembering how glorious I felt when I didn’t eat grains and dairy. When I was pregnant all I wanted was pizza. So I ate it. And you know what pizza is? Dairy, grains, sugar…all of the things that (I already know) make me feel like dookie.
I feel sooo much better again and have tons more energy, even though I’m extremely sleep deprived (and will be for the next 30 years).
And the whole breast milk situation? WAY. BETTER.
Before I was pumping between 4-8 ounces every 3 hours. Now I’m up to 12 ounces. That’s a whole beer!
It’s seriously amazing.
Not going to lie, it’s hard at first. (Because apparently Mini Wheats aren’t Whole 30?!?) But you can’t think of it as a “diet”. Because it’s not. It’s a lifestyle change. And I also had pretty good motivation (the cutest poop machine) to keep me on track. So that definitely helped.
Of course there are going to be cheat days because we’ve got a big month. Today Reese and I are going to the booming metropolis of Wimberley to celebrate our anniversary! And just for the record, I’d say that the fact that we’ve survived buying a house, renovating a house, labor, and 2 months of newborn-sleep deprivation is a pretty good sign! Because it’s really hard to like someone when you both smell terrible and look like the crypt keeper from getting 4 hours of sleep for weeks on end. Sidenote: I need a better under-eye concealer. For the 1 day a week I manage to put makeup on…but considering the effort I put into hair & make-up before having a baby, did we really think things were going to get any better? I don’t know how these Instagram moms do it. I’m just not about that life.
If you feel like poo you should give Whole 30 a try. Maybe start with Whole 5 or something and see how it goes. I highly recommend it. Your pants will too.
