It’s been a while. Turns out having a newborn baby will make you a bit busy.
From the beginning of all this, me and my hippie self wanted to try cloth diapering. It’s becoming really popular again and there are A LOT of different brands out there! I watched tons of YouTube videos and read millions of blog posts from Pinterest to get the DL on this whole sitch. Turns out I still have zero clue what I’m doing, but I tend to navigate most of life that way, soooooo…
The number one thing that all of the posts had in common was don’t commit to a particular brand until your baby is here.
Update: finding the right cloth diaper is like finding the right pair of blue jeans. And we all know how fun that can be.
We didn’t get many newborn-size diapers because we figured we should get a grasp on everything else before we dove into the cloths. Around Lad’s second week we decided to give it a shot…and we now know which brands DON’T work. Haha.
Luckily we also found the brands that do!
Thank Jesus there are several cloth diapering Facebook groups and that has been a lot of help reading the stuff people post. It’s seriously a cult. Anways, here’s a bit of my scientific research:
This brand gets a big fat F from Lad and me. Maybe it’s his little bird legs, but these bad boys aren’t the best at keeping the liquids in. Which is what we were kind of going for. I also think he has a higher-than-normal booty crack, so we are working around that lol. This type of diaper is considered a “cover”. So you put your stuffing/fluff/pee-absorber-material on your baby and then use the cover as a waterproof shield. I do like the cover concept, but these are a no-go. Maybe when he chubs up a bit. If you have a fat baby with an average length crack, give these a shot! 😉
I love these! Of course they are the most expensive. But they are adjustable. So they fit him now and I can undo the snaps in the front to make it larger and use it for the next year or two! It’s also classified as an “all-in-one” diaper so you just throw the whole thing in the wash and don’t have to worry about stuffing it or using pre-folds. The elastic around the legs is tight enough to keep everything from sloshing out. Wahoo! Right now he looks like a runt in this diaper but that’s ok, because it works and it’s cute.
Another brand that gets a big WOOHOO. This is another type of cover. They are my favorite because they are economical and the newborn size fit his scrawny little self from the start. The newborn size isn’t adjustable like the GroVia, but the next size up of this brand is. I actually ordered more of these and I literally just found out on Thursday how the pre-folds are supposed to be folded. Only took 6 weeks…
“WOOHOO” again! This is also a cover but I like using the Charlie Banana brand inserts for it. They fit perfectly. It’s adjustable and it’s Velcro – which some people like and some people don’t. Apparently when the baby gets bigger they learn to undo the velcro and will end up naked. We don’t need that with as high as he can squirt pee. We may get a few more covers of this brand and go with the snappys to be safe.
We had gotten several of these diapers as gifts but haven’t been able to use them becuase even at the smallest setting they work better once your baby is around 10 pounds. We’re there! They are another all-in-one diaper and they work like a DARN DREAM. They keep the goods in and they are easy to fasten. The only downside of these would be that they are a little more pricey. BUT – Reese’s cousin did cloth diapering and she used these diapers for all three kids! Did you catch that – same diapers. Didn’t have to buy them after the first tot. That’s what I’m talking about.
This has all been trial and error – mostly error so far, but I figured as much haha. If you google “cloth diapering” you will have a bazillion search results and see all the aforementioned cults. It really is gaining popularity again and these brands don’t even scratch the surface of what is all available. So far we have just been using disposables when we leave the house and at night, but eventually the goal is to go cloth all the time. We will get better at it all, but learning is hard when you are extremely sleep deprived lol.
Everything else on the home front has been going great! This kid eats like a grown-a** man already so that’s fun. His favorite thing to do is take a big dump right after we change him. He HATES sitting still and I spend the majority of my days bouncing on my exercise ball with him. (I sat on it all the time when I was pregnant because it was supposed to open the pelvic floor and make for a quicker labor….I did not have a quick labor and I am now a slave to the bouncy ball because I guess it’s a comforting motion lol. Oh well.
Until next time…whenever that may be 😉

P.S. Lad’s little cousin Frances was born on Father’s Day and she is still in the NICU. Throw in a few extra prayers for her if you don’t mind that she can grow big and strong and come home soon so they can be best friends! 🙂
